As car drivers, we are aware of our blind spots when we’re behind the wheel. But did you know that drivers of heavy vehicles – like buses – have additional blind spots?
From their seats, bus drivers have restricted vision of drivers or pedestrians occupying the red-shaded areas on the images below. We want all pedestrians, especially our youngest road users, to take care and stay clear of these areas, particularly when crossing the road before or after catching a bus.

Of course, it’s not only drivers of buses that have blind spots: drivers of other vehicles can’t see pedestrians who walk out on to the road from in front or behind a bus. Those pedestrians can’t see through the bus to oncoming traffic either.
Lack of understanding of these key blind spot zones is the cause of many incidents and accidents around buses.
On our school visits, we show students safe ways to share the road with buses – as pedestrians, cyclists and pre-drivers.
